Chapter Meeting
December 15, 2007
| Today's program was a stirring retrospective slide show of the events of this year through September. Produced by Paul Simpson, Piedmont Chapter Webmaster, the show demonstrated why the Piedmont Chapter, GASSAR, is known as the "Award Winning Piedmont Chapter". Its purpose was to acquaint newer members and prospects with the activities of the Chapter in a way that Committee reports could not. A shorter version will be used as a recruiting tool in addressing civic, fraternal and other groups in the future. If you would like a copy of the slide show, please notify Jim McIntire.

Vans Creek
December 8, 2007
|
There's no doubt that the fight at Elbert County's Vann's Creek on Feb. 11, 1779, was one of a most of important little skirmishes in a big war.
If an outnumbered group of patriots that day hadn't taken potshots and thinned a loyalist force crossing into Georgia, who knows what would have happened three days later at the battle of Kettle Creek, a famous patriot victory.
And the fact that the obscure Vann's Creek battle got its due this weekend could be part of a larger shift in thinking about Georgia's Revolutionary War sites.
On Saturday, representatives from the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, including Piedmont members, Georgia Color Guard Commander Paul Prescott, Billy Templeton, Bob Sapp, Bobby Shaw and George Thurmond, mustered along the Savannah River to place a granite marker commemorating the Vann's Creek fight.
