Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet

After the invocation was given by Chaplain Al Finley, the Piedmont Chapter Color Guard Posted the Colors.
|
|
Occupants of the Head Table were piped in by Piedmont Piper John Mortison.
|
|
Col. and Mrs. Ben Purcell, President and Mrs. Carl Tanner, GASSAR President Charlie and Mrs. Newcomer, Col. and Mrs. George Thurmond and Vice President and Mrs. Jim McIntire prepared to take their seats.
|
|
Piper John Mortison received his pay.
|
|
John D. Washburn was awarded the Lawrence W. Maurer, Jr. Eagle Scout Program Award by President Carl Tanner and Registrar Bob Sapp.
|
|
Matthew R. Gordon was awarded the Outstanding Citizenship Award and Pin as the Chapter winner of the George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest.
|
|
David McCleary was awarded the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal for providing liason for the Piedmont Chapter with other community organizations within North Fulton County.
|
|
John L. Mortison was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.
|
|
Col. George E. Thurmond was awarded a Certificate of Distinguished Service.
|
|
and Robert A. Sapp. A Certificate of Distinguished Service was also awarded to Webmaster Paul C. Simpson, but it was not presented due to his absence as he and Mrs. Simpson celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations on both counts, Paul.

The John Martin Membership award was presented to James M. McIntire.
|
|
The Officers for the year 2008 - 2009 were installed.
|
|
Jim McIntire delivered the new President's Comments.
|
|
Col Benjamin H. and Mrs. Anne Purcell were the featured speakers for the event.
|
|
The Piedmont Chapter surprised the Purcell's by presenting Col Purcell a cupcake in honor of his 80th birthday which he celebrated two days before addressing our Chapter.
|
|
Col Purcell delivered a moving speech in which he recited the events of his last mission in Vietnam in 1968, his capture by the NVA and his imprisonment of five years in a POW camp before his release in 1973.
|
|
Mrs. Anne Purcell describes her life and worries during Col Purcell's imprisonment. For 18 months he was listed as MIA. She and her family finally learned that he was a POW but had no idea as to his condition until his release.
|
|
Jim McIntire presented Col. Purcell a Speaker's Certificate in appreciation for his address.
|
|
Col. Purcell provided a display of artifacts of his ordeal and copies of his book, Love and Duty, which sold briskly.
|
|
The Color Guard Retired the Colors at the conclusion of the meeting.
|
|

The parade commenced at 10AM and proceeded to the Town Square
Compatriot Jack Ferguson emceed the morning ceremony
The Mayor Pro Tem gave greetings on behalf of the City of Washington
Ron and Connie Aylor as the Continental Regiment Fife & Drum
George Washington (Larry Guzy) describes war time conditions
Ben Franklin (Billy Templeton) recounts the role he played in Paris
Nancy Hart, the War Woman, describes the fatal hospitality she gave
to interloping loyalists who invaded her cabin.
The departure of the Color Guard signaled the end of the morning
ceremony
Eighty wreaths were laid at the foot of the monument on War Hill for
the afternoon ceremony
GASSAR President Charlie Newcomer presided

The Continental Regiment Fife & Drum played "Kettle Creek", a tune
of their own composition
Secretary General David Appleby was the key note speaker
Eighty presenters addressed the monument in solemn procession
